Repetition is the mother of all skill, which is why a really effective method of learning is by rote.
if you wanted to build a muscle on a pec deck, you would pull the pads toward and away from you in repetition. I learn the lyrics to songs by repeating them until they are firmly fixed in my mind; footballers practise a penalty kick until they hit the same spot every time. Muscle memory! We train neural pathways by repeating things over and over.
It’s important to remember that the subconscious mind believes whatever it is told without question: it cannot judge or discern.
One of the main directives of the subconscious is to store information, regardless of whether it is true or false.
The subconscious mind is a highly intelligent, resourceful creative aspect of the psyche. It contains memory of every experience you have ever had, at every age you have been.
The Russian Doll Theory
When I work with clients, I’m a great fan of using Russian Dolls. Picture them now and imagine one doll representing every single day of your life. Each of the dolls wants the best for you.
When we repeat an affirmation, the dolls (aspects of you from different ages) believe them and respond accordingly. Simple!
Anyway, don’t take my word for it – try it yourself!
My Simple Guide To Doing Affirmations (including a handy trick)
Write two or three affirmations that are really meaningful to you.
Repeat them on and off throughout the day.
Try linking them to something you do regularly everyday, such as cleaning your teeth or washing your hands
This way, repeating affirmations becomes automatic and you don’t have to think too hard about saying them – they are triggered each time you pick your toothbrush up.
Try it and let me know how you get on. Also if you have any questions about affirmations drop me a line on Sue@thestresshacker.com
